For years, data have shown that touring bikes tend to be owned by older, more experienced, more sedate riders and are dramatically underrepresented in accidents. Yet we pay far higher rates. Where is the fairness?
To add insult to injury, the basic compulsory rates that cover damage only to others are, in general, far too high to be justified. My basic bike insurance costs about the same as the insurance on my 18-year-old car, yet in an accident a car will inflict far more damage to others than a motorcycle ever can.
With the increasing popularity of motorcycles on the road, it's time ICBC stopped using absurdly irrelevant metrics and started using proper rate-setting principles for motorcycles.
