Motocyclists looking for affordable insurance will need to search harder for the best quote as premiums rise in response to the swelling ranks of riders taking to the roads, Onlyinsurance has warned.
With the relentless rise in the cost of running a car over the past year and growing traffic congestion, the motorbike has become increasingly popular as a cheaper alternative of getting around the firm said.
But along with the growing number of motorcyclists on the road comes a rise in the number of accidents – and insurers are upping their premiums to cope with increased claims. In particular, it is middle-aged bikers with little experience but plenty of money to spend on high-powered sport bikes who are contributing to a surge in serious crashes.

Motor insurance companies have warned that this growing market may find it hard to find competitive prices for their
insurance premiums,” said Ian Durrell of Onlyinsurance. “To obtain a competitive premium new motorbike owners are required to show evidence of recent riding experience to reassure the insurer that they are road worthy."
"Even someone returning to motor-biking after a gap of a few years may have to take a new test to avoid being hit by hefty premiums,” he adds.
